Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa) Identification Guide

Identification

The Brown-Banded cockroach is light brown to tan with distinct brown bands across its wings and abdomen. Adults measure about 0.5 inches in length. Males have fully developed wings and can fly short distances, while females have shorter wings and do not fly. They have six legs, long antennae, and an oval-shaped body. Unlike other cockroach species, Brown-Banded cockroaches prefer drier environments.

Lifecycle & Reproduction

Brown-Banded cockroaches undergo incomplete metamorphosis, developing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females produce egg cases (oothecae) containing 10–18 eggs, which hatch in about 50 days. Nymphs mature into adults in 3 to 6 months, depending on environmental conditions. Adults typically live for 6 to 10 months.

Habits, Diet & Behavior

These cockroaches are nocturnal and prefer warm, dry areas. They are scavengers, feeding on starchy materials, glue, wallpaper, book bindings, and food crumbs. Unlike other cockroach species that prefer humid environments, Brown-Banded cockroaches tend to infest higher locations such as shelves, ceilings, and furniture.

Where You’ll Find Them / Typical Locations

Brown-Banded cockroaches are often found in:

  • Upper cabinets and high shelves
  • Behind picture frames and wall decorations
  • Inside furniture, including sofas and dressers
  • Electrical outlets and appliance motors
  • Closets, storage rooms, and offices

Threats & Danger

Brown-Banded cockroaches carry bacteria and pathogens that can contaminate food and surfaces, potentially leading to foodborne illnesses. Their feces and shed skins may also trigger allergies and asthma in sensitive individuals.

Prevention

  • Seal cracks and crevices to block entry points
  • Maintain cleanliness, especially in dry storage areas
  • Store food in sealed containers and avoid clutter
  • Regularly inspect and vacuum areas where they may hide
  • Reduce excessive warmth and dryness with proper ventilation

Signs of Infestation

  • Presence of small, light brown cockroaches in high locations
  • Brown egg cases (oothecae) attached to furniture, walls, or ceilings
  • Small, dark fecal droppings resembling black pepper
  • A musty odor in areas with high cockroach activity

How to Get Rid of It

  • Use bait stations, insecticidal dust, and gel baits in infested areas
  • Apply insect growth regulators (IGRs) to prevent reproduction
  • Clean and declutter storage spaces to eliminate hiding spots
  • Seek professional pest control assistance for severe infestations
